The Adour river and its Gaves

L'Adour et ses gaves,The Adour river y sus Gaves the gascon river with restless moods

the Adour river, that rise in the Pic du Midi of Bigorre", is the pyrenéen river per excellence.

It' s from the "Bec du Gave" when it takes all its mountain character when is joined by the "Gaves Réunis", formed themself by the "Gaves of Pau and of Oloron", hurtling down sides of the Soule and of the Haut-Béarn.

Its story is also tumultuous. Vagabond river during centuries, flowing into the ocean in "Vieux Boucau"( old mouth in gascon),or in Capbreton in the Landes, according to its moods and its floods, it's only in 1562 on request of Bayonne and on order of Charles IX of France that its course will be definitely stabilized.

From this date, it joins Atlantic at the level of Anglet on its left bank and in Tarnos on its right bank, after having crossing Bayonne and Boucau ( " mouth" in gascon").
